FreeTranslator is a translation software tool that allows you to quickly translate specific words from one language into another. The program looks up the word you entered in one or more of the existing dictionaries, and shows all the results found. It supports all the most widely spoken languages around the world and, of course, it is free.
A very important feature of this program is that it works based on pre-defined and pre-downloaded dictionaries. By default, it comes with just the English-Italian and Italian-English dictionaries, but there are plenty of additional free ones that you can download from the developer's website, and add to the program easily. Those dictionaries cover a wide variety of languages, like Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish, among many others. The dictionaries come in language pairs - for example, Spanish-Italian or Russian-English. Once you have downloaded and added them, you can define your favorite ones. You can then perform your searches only on your favorite dictionaries, or on a specific one, which you can select at any time. All of this means this program does not require an Internet connection to work properly, as most modern translation programs do. However, it requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or later to work. Besides, you do not need to install the program to make it work - it comes as a simple folder that you can place wherever you like, and run the program's executable file directly from there.
Another very novel feature of FreeTranslator is that, when you minimize it, it disappears from your Windows task bar. However, it keeps a little transparent text box active and always on top, where you can type a word any time you need it translated. Whenever you make use of this box, the program’s window will appear again showing you the results.
The program's interface is simple and easy to use - however, it is a bit coarse. It allows you to choose whether to look up in your favorite dictionaries (they may be one or more), or only in the active one. It also provides a text box for typing the word(s) you want to have translated, and a panel for displaying the results. An additional module of the program allows you to edit the contents of any of the present dictionaries to better fit your needs. As said, the program is free - however, the developer accepts donations. A serious setback is that this program does not allow you to translate phrases or - even most important - paragraphs. It only works for single words or, at most, for certain phrasal verbs.
